Poetry Story
An author writes a book or novel to have the whole story put right out for you with a clear cut beginning middle and end. A poet can write a ââ¬Å"novelâ⬠in very minimal lines or a few verses. They tell a story but give the rest for you to think and ponder about A poet uses multiple literary devices in one single poem. When reading a poem you have to decode or decipher what the poet is really trying to say. They may use metaphors, Irony and much more, In the poem ââ¬Å"l Finally managed to speak to herâ⬠, the poet, Hal Sorority uses both of these literary devices. The first literary device that is used in this poem is a metaphor. The poem ââ¬Å"l finally managed to speak to herâ⬠is about a young man sitting across from a young girl on a bus. They are driving through New York City, and he would like to talk to her. He says ââ¬Å"The trees look so much greener is this part of the country. In New York City everything looks so drab. â⬠Although he is referring to the trees, Sorority uses the trees as a metaphor for him. Despite the fact that he has written about the trees you have to look deeper and the meaning and decipher what Is trying to be said.Since the metaphor is really talking about him rather than the trees it really brings out the meaning of the poem. In an interview Sorority said ââ¬Å"she was too self-involved. Or to put it in nicer terms, she wasn't into me. ââ¬Å"(lengthier) When he said this what I got is that when he wrote that she said ââ¬Å"when you find another one let me knowâ⬠Is that she didn't really want to talk to him so she Is finishing the conversation. The metaphors in this poem are outstanding and really give you a glimpse into the author's life. Till you actually really take a deeper look into the poem and realize what he Is trying to say you may think that he Is literally talking about the trees In different parts of the country. The second literary device that Sorority uses in his poem ââ¬Å"l final ly managed to speak to herâ⬠is irony. Irony is used in Sorority poem ââ¬Å"l Finally Managed to Speak to Her because originally reading the poem you blatantly see that he is talking to a girl on the bus about trees. While you reread the poem you start to realize that It Is not just the trees he is talking about, it is her.Even though you want to think one thing there are multiple ways to look at this poem. This is where the irony comes in. Is it Ironic that he says ââ¬Å"everything looks so drabâ⬠? If he is trying to talk about her is he trying to refer to every other girl being drab so that she can feel special? Despite the fact that we can look at this many ways Sorority says, ââ¬Å"l wanted her to see me rather than the differences in the trees. â⬠(Interview) It is very ironic that the author is using Reese to talk about a love life that never happened. It's like he is trying to put the trees and the girl he Is talking to out there for others to realize that yo u may get turned down every now and then but don't give up. The literary devices Hal Slowly used in his poem, ââ¬Å"l finally Managed to Speak to Her was metaphor and irony. He used them in two similar ways but when you look at them they are completely different. The way he uses his metaphors Is astonishing. The irony that Is put Into this poem Is all around noteworthy. The way he makes you think about what your reading, and does not just give it to you. Although it is a little more work for the reader it is worth it. When you are just reading It for what is written you will never get the tulle story. Weather you are a girl or boy you can relate to this story because almost every person in the world has been turned down once in their life time and that is what makes this poem over the top, almost everyone can relate to it. Rituals Rule Religion - Essay Example Furthermore, people involved in the project used adornments and intricate materials. Eventually, a more permanent, central site was later erected for the whole nation to worship God as one. This site was later referred to as the temple. Priests and Levites (the former with elaborate ministerial garb and the latter being divided into three groups with specific functions) acted as mediators between God and the people. A list of various sacrificial offerings was also recorded. Frequently, the use of animals and other agricultural products became the daily offering which became God's sacrificial and spiritual staple. Finally, feasts were mandatory for all worshippers every year. Such feasts were appointed days of worship characterized by pageantry, solemnity and spiritual meaning. Both Jews and Christians share similar concepts in their worship of God. Primarily, thanksgiving is a major component of their worship. The Jews and their Christian counterparts are equally thankful people would see worship as incomplete without thanksgiving. Both groups also employ rituals suited to their understanding of God. Relocation Stress Syndrome Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Relocation Stress Syndrome - Essay Example The essay "Relocation Stress Syndrome" analyzes the article "Reducing Relocation Stress Syndrome In Long Term Care Facilities" written by Sherri Melrose where she states that one of the possible issues that care, givers, patients and their families experience due in health care settings is relocation stress syndrome. She states that relocation may disturb cognitive as well as physical balances of the patient during the initial year of his transfer to a care unit that provides long-term care. She states that during the initial three months of the transfer, both the patient as well as their family may express feelings that are negative in nature due to relocation. She states that care givers can deal with the issue, by carefully listening to the problems stated by both the family and the patient, the care giver con put forward different choices and identify patientââ¬â¢s coping strategies and use them to make the patient comfortable. She concludes her research by stating that it is very difficult for a registered nurse to identify whether a patient is suffering from such stress and providing empathy may even become difficult and the most difficult part of the entire process is keeping a record. I believe that every individual has a way of coping with stress, but certain people are informed about it and others are not. A nurse can identify these strategies through observation and interviews and once they have identified the strategies, they can implement to help the patient in coping with the stress.

Compostion article Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1
Compostion article - Essay Example Researchers have presented that basic research literacy courses are not appealing to students, and they usually have negative feelings towards it. The Human Resources Development in Canada had expressed that employers have found skills developed through research courses as vital for work (as cited in Shipwright et al., 2010, p. 574). The researchers were burdened of this need, and thus aimed to enhance learning in the said courses through the use of an online graphic novel called Citizen Researcher (CR). Through this multimedia, they intend to stimulate the studentsââ¬â¢ interest in research. Guided by these goals, there are four research questions formulated for this study: (1) What impact does CR have on studentsââ¬â¢ perceptions of their research literacy skills?; (2) What is the studentsââ¬â¢ level of satisfaction with the course content, design delivery method and learning activities?; (3) What are studentsââ¬â¢ experiences with CR?; and (4) What are the strengths, c hallenges and barriers associated with this new model of course delivery? (p. 576). These are ventured in order to determine the effects of the technology in the studentsââ¬â¢ learning. Although research literacy courses may be boring and irrelevant to students, utilization of an online graphic novel to arouse their interest and assist in their learning needs may be seen to be of benefit. Details of the said study, through its methods, results, conclusions, strengths and limitations, et cetera, are reviewed and analyzed in order to appreciate the significance of such endeavor. Review and Analysis I. Methods A descriptive study using surveys and interviews was conducted among 18 full-time undergraduate students in 14 programs, who were attending post-secondary college in a large city (p. 576). Three surveys were made, one demographic, and pre-post Research Literacy Competency surveys. The demographic survey provided a profile for the learners, including their reading habits and In ternet skills. The Research Literacy Competency survey conducted before exposing the respondents to the multimedia is used as baseline data for the Research Literacy Competency survey completed after they have utilized the CR. The post-CR exposure survey contained three open-ended items to ask participants for their opinions and suggestions regarding the multimedia. The tools used for both pre- and post Research Literacy Competency surveys are reported to be valid by the Cronbach alpha, and thus said to be reliable. All these mentioned measures are based on self-reports of the learners. Individual telephone interviews which lasted for 10 to 20 minutes, and participated by seven students, were made in order to better understand their experiences with the CR. The interviews utilized a structured guide, then they were taped and transcribed. II. Results and Conclusions The results of the pilot study show and further verify the conclusion of previous literature that using the multimedia yielded satisfactory experiences and it became an instrument to learn research literacy skills (p. 581). Learning the importance of critical thinking is reported by the students, and activities in the CR reinforced key concepts in research. There is also a noticeable significant increase in scores from the pre-course survey as compared to the post-course survey, which is evidence that the multimedia is effective in enhancing the knowledge of the respondents. Although there are positive results,

Human resource management simulation game of Green leafs hotels Essay
Human resource management simulation game of Green leafs hotels - Essay Example Absenteeism was also not more than the national average of 498 but equal to it. For the second quarter, the cost of hiring and layoffs dropped to $185,000. This comprised a sum of 60 new hiring, 5 new promotion additions and 5 promotion losses. This move helped in recording no overage or shortages. Different rates of wages increases were carried out across various levels given as $20, $15, $10, $7, and $5. This was in relation to a total training cost of $33,800. Indeed, the department did not pay as much attention to issues of training as it did in the previous quarter. The reason was that there were not as many new vacancies that needed to be filled. But the absence of training slightly increased accident rates and absenteeism (Chen and So, 2002). The total cost of hiring and layoff for the third quarter came up to $158,000. This entailed 59 new hiring, nine new promotions nine promotion losses. Consequently, there was no vacancy, anytime there was a loss of promotion position. Except for level 5, there was planned wage increase across all levels with levels 4, 3, 2 and 1 recording increases of $60, $55, $50 and $45. This was in relation to overall training cost of $33,800 just as in the second quarter. This means that we learnt from our mistakes in the second quarter were wages increases were not used as a means of morale boaster to ensure that there was sufficient wage increases this time round. The motivation helped in improving punctuality but because cost of training was not increased, minor accidents were still recorded (Hissam and Daniel, 1999). The fourth quarter saw one of the least total costs of hiring and layoffs, which came up of $100,000. Much of these went into promotions as compared to hiring as there were 50 new hiring; less than previous quarters but 19 promotions; far more than had been for any previous quarter. This quarter saw the highest increase in

Judith Anne Neelley Essay Example for Free
Judith Anne Neelley Essay Judith Anne Neelley belongs to the growing list of women offenders convicted for heinous crimes. Just 18 years old, she was convicted in 1983 in Alabama for the brutal murder of a young girl and was meted the death penalty. However, contrasting views of whether the death penalty should be implemented and racial bias as well, influenced a former governor of the state to commute her sentence to life imprisonment in 1999 (ProsandCons.us, 2009). Her Crimes Sometime in 1980, she robbed a woman inside a mall at gunpoint (Ramsland, 2007). Two years later, she lured and kidnapped Lisa Ann Millican, 13 years old of Rome, Georgia, who was under the auspices of a home for neglected girls (Ramsland, 2007). She was sexually assaulted, stabbed, injected with drain cleaner, shot to death and her body pushed down a mountain where it was found days later (Ashley, 1999). After this, she persuaded a man and his companion to ride with her and show her around the town because she was new there. She then shot but did not kill the man John Hancock and took her girlfriend Janice Chatman to a motel where she and her husband molested and raped her (Oââ¬â¢Shea, 1999). Over-all, she was involved in 15 murders that occurred not only in Georgia but also in Tennessee and Alabama (Oââ¬â¢Shea, 1999). She also continually committed minor offenses such as swindling, car theft, petty theft, robbery and minor assaults (Furio, 2001). Social Background Judith Neelley did not attend middle school or high school and she was not known to hold any permanent job, doing odd jobs and also swindling and robbing in order to survive (Wetsch, 2005). As a teenager, she spent time in a youth center, having been abandoned by her parents. There she claimed that she was sexually assaulted (Wetsch, 2005). She was pregnant during her detention for armed robbery and at 15-years old she gave birth to twins (Oââ¬â¢Shea, 1999). Her third child was also born in prison just before her trial for the murder of Lisa Millican. There is no mention of her family or childhood in the literature encountered as she was not fond of giving interviews. Marriage and Family Life At a very early age, she married Alvin Neelley who was twice her age, an ex-convict who served time for shooting his first wife. With their common behavior of being violent towards women, Alvin figured as a partner in the crimes she instigated. They referred to themselves as The Nightrider and Lady Sundance (Ramsland, 2007). Following his release from prison for their robbery in 1980, Alvin took a job at a gas station and used his earnings to buy two cars with CB radios installed (Wetsch, 2005). Judith will drive around to look for the next victim and will radio Alvin to join her when the victim is in the car. Their relationship, though sexual in nature, was at times violent and lasted because of this partnership. à According to her husband, Judithââ¬â¢s personality was very dominant and she was violent which accounted for her strong influence over him. Alvin Neelley later stated that he went along because his wife had such power over other people and he was left with no choice (Ramsland, 2007). On the other hand, Judith stated during the trial that she took women and young girls to please her husband because he wanted them, that he willingly planned and executed the acts, that he battered her and threatened her children to force her to take part (Oââ¬â¢Shea, 1999). However, investigators and the jury eventually agreed that Judith actively participated in the killing sprees as the brains behind the murders (Kelleher Kelleher, 1998). While on predating sprees, she brought her children along. They helped her earn the trust of the people she lured. The toddlers witnessed the sexual molestation and torture of Lisa Millican and the other victims by their mother. This type of parenting, husband and wife relationship and over-all family life deviates from what is typical. Contributing Factors She was not found by the jury to be mentally disturbed or to be an abused wife factors which could help explain her brutal behavior. After her conviction, she appealed to the court but exhausted the appeals process with futility (ProsandCons.us, 2009). Does this person fit the profile of the typical offender for this type of crime? Judith Neelley did not fit the profile of the typical murderer. She was female, white, a young mother, slim and blond. Females were generally regarded as soft, caring or docile and not aggressive or violent (Schurman-Kauflin, 2000). At the time she committed murder, the stereotype of persons who had the capacity to perform such crimes was male and probably black. For this reason, it was not seriously believed at first that she perpetrated the murders (Texas AM International University, 2004). Initially, the burden of accountability for the acts was brought heavily on her husband because he was the male. At the end of the trial, she got the death penalty while her husband got two life terms. Based on current information on criminal behavior however, Judith Anne Neelley fits the profile of a female serial team killer. Because she lacked the strength to subdue victims or carry dead bodies, she raped and killed together with her husband who was also a sexual killer (Kelleher Kelleher, 1998). Only one thing sets her apart from other females in serial team killing she had already attempted to kill a man by shooting him before she even met her husband (Furio, 2001). She was delinquent as a teenager and before age 20, performed her first serial killing. Very sociable, she was able to talk her victims, either when they were alone or with their companions, into going for a ride with her in her car (TAMIU, 2004). She felt herself superior over others and called the authorities about Lisa Millican and where her body could be found, implicating a warden as the one responsible. She was cruel, merciless and delighted in the suffering and death of her victims. During the trial, she played the role of victim in saying that she was a battered wife so that her husband would get the maximum penalty while she will serve time only as an accomplice (TAMIU, 2004). Which crime theory that we have studied comes closest to explaining this offenderââ¬â¢s behavior? The strain theory of crime causation comes closest to explaining Judith Neelleyââ¬â¢s behavior. The extreme stress from social and economic factors that she experienced as a young girl being abandoned by her family, her poverty and then being sexually molested while in a juvenile center, all contributed in pushing her to commit crime. Unsuccessful in obtaining power from money or education, she killed others to feel powerful. List of References Ashley, D. (1999). Woman Loses Death Row Appeal.
